PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Newton's first law states that an object that is in motion will stay in motion until an outside force hits the object. And any object that is at rest will stay at rest until an outside force hits it.
Ex. When playing pool, the player's stick hits the white ball putting it in motion. The stick is the outside force. The force of the white ball will put the other balls in motion.
This law is also called the law of Inertia. Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion. When you are in a car and it stops suddenly, your body will push forward. Why? The breaks stop the car, not your body so your body keeps moving because of Inertia.
To change the motion of an object, inertia must overcome by an outside force upon the object.
Ex. Until a soccer player kicks the ball, the ball will stay at rest. However, when the ball is kicked the force on it is suddenly unbalanced allowing the ball to fly across the field.
