BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • It regulated the European colonization of Africa
  • It could be seen as the formulation of the Scramble for Africa
  • Ushered in time of colonial activity from Europe
  • It eliminated the then current borders of the African continent

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • The felt they could just go into Africa and take it over because they thought they were superior
  • They wanted to begin controlling the raw materials in Africa
  • Much fighting was needed in Africa to come through taking it over
  • The turning point was the invention of the machine gun

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Go into and try to force there rule and ideas on the people
  • Could bring diseases to sicken the population of Africa
  • They needed wars to completely begin to control Africa
  • They would rule indirectly, through administrators

END OF COLONIALISM

  • Some rebelled
  • WWII caused much of the end of the colonialism period
  • Allies felt they needed to set example for the rest of world
  • UN opened possibilities for independence

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Borders broke ethnic and cultural groups
  • Inexperienced leaders were corrupt and abused there power
  • Decreased possibilities of educational development
  • Caused civil wars, genocides, and overall civil unrest in the countries
