PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ASIAN PATIENTS

  • Greet elders first and address them in a formal matter
  • Good body language shows respect
  • Address another by surname
  • Don't sit with legs crossed or lean on desk, these are signs of contempt
  • Young people will respect and obey elders

THE HEAD AND BLOOD

  • The head is the most sacred part of the body
  • Don't touch or reach over the head without permission
  • Blood represents a persons essence
  • Blood is not drawn for medical purposes

MEDICATION

  • Steeped in water & drunk in a form of tea or slush
  • Believes that injected medication is more effective
  • Has a lot of ways to self medicate
  • Visit physician for diagnosis

DIET

  • Most are lactose intolerate
  • Some may have family bring food from home
  • Asian chicken soup is a common illness food
  • Believed that beef nor eggs should be served to the ill
  • Fish is a common food to eat after childbirth

ACUPUNCTURE

  • Developed between 106 b.c.e and 220 a.c.e
  • Treats an excess of yang
  • Restores balance between yin and yang
  • 9 needles to specific meridian points in body

COINING & PINCHING

  • Metal coin is dipped in oil, heated and rubbed over skin
  • Welts will appear when finished
  • Also can pinch skin between thumb and index finger to produce welts
  • Used to draw out fever and illness

CUPPING

  • Suction produced by heating
  • Apply small tubes/cups to forehead or abdomen
  • As they cool the cups produce negative pressure
  • This results in circular ecchymosis on the skin

MOXIBUSTION

  • Treatment for excess of yin (cold)
  • Burning incence is heated.
  • Apply it to the torso, head, or neck
  • Produce superficial burns

  • Colored altars with offerings honors the ancestors
  • Ancestors are asked to watch over family
  • Asked to prevent or cure illness

  • Feminine side to things
