The first European people who arrived on the American continent were the Pilgrim Fathers. they arrived at the beginning of the 17th century escaping from religious persecution.
In the 1770s the original thirteen colonies did not have good relations with Britain: they did not accept to pay high taxes to the mother country without having political representation in the British Parliament.
The protests of the colonies led to the 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain. Seven years later, in 1783, with the Treaty of Paris, the United States were recognized as a new nation.
