1. (a) In this narrative essay, what difficulties does the washwoman face? (b) How does she respond to those challenges? (c) What inspirational lesson does the author take away from the story?

a. She faces poverty. She has to work under very difficult conditions to make a living. She suffers exhaustion and illness.

b. Despite the hardships of the weather and the heavy loads, she remains positive and without bitterness. She is determined to do her duty.

c. In spite of a difficult and unappreciated life, the old washwoman proves that people can endure, find satisfaction in their work, and remain positive about life.

2. (a) Use a chart like the one shown to record three significant details that Singer uses to describe the washwoman and her son.

(b) What impression of each character does each detail create?

a. The washwoman is small, old, and wrinkled; she does her work conscientiously and charges no more than others; she is no bitter toward her son. The washwoman’s son is wealthy; he is ashamed of his mother; he does not invite her to his wedding.

b. She is hardworking, honest, and determined; she still cares for her son. He is snobby and self-centered.
