CAUSES

• The USSR moved their missiles so they were closer to the USA
• The USA set up a naval blockade around Cuba
• Fidel Castro took control of Cuba
• There was tension between the USA and the USSR

KEY FEATURES/EVENTS

• The Americans set up a "naval blockade"
• The "Bay of Pigs"
• U2 spy plane takes pictures of missile bases in Cuba
• Khrushchev accused America of piracy
• The US secretly agreed to remove missiles in Turkey

CONSEQUENCES

• The "red telephone" was set up
• This was a direct link between the White House and the USSR
• Relations between the USSR & USA became better
• They agreed that Nuclear war shouldn't happen
• France left NATO and made their own nuclear weapons.
