THE FOUNDATION OF THE EMPIRE

Julius Caesar led a Roman army to Gaul and conquered the region to add to the Growing Roman Empire.

This created a political crisis, and because of his victories conservative leaders sought to remove him from his status.

Caesar wouldn't stand aside so in 49 BCE he turned his army towards Rome, and in a few years he named himself as dictator over the Roman Empire.

CAESAR'S IMPROVEMENT

  • He launched large scale building projects
  • By doing this he provided employment for the poor
  • Also extended citizenship to the outer provinces
  • By ruling he alienated many of the Roman elite classes
  • He also distributed land to veterans

Augustus was originally Octavian, and he is Julius Caesar's nephew. In 27 BCE the Senate gave him the title Augustus and he then ruled for 45 years.

Augustus included the elite in his government unlike Caesar. He had a centralized government.

AUGUSTUS

  • The commanders of the army would report directly to him
  • Centralized political and military power
  • He eventually took control of all important government functionsf
  • Died in 14 CE
