PRESENTATION OUTLINE
A is for Alone. Ponyboy feels so alone when it comes to his love for books and watching movies alone. He considered himself an Outsider, hence the book name. Until he foreshadowed that he met someone that shares his love and could eventually have a true friend that he could express his feelings to.
B is for blade. When Johnny was jumped and injured really bad, he swore if Socs were ever to again he'd kill them; that's why he carries a switch blade now. Also, since Ponyboy skipped a grade, he is in advanced classes with Socs like biology. So when the class was dissecting worms and Ponyboy took out a blade, a girl called him out and told him he really was a hood and Ponyboy really took that one to heart. Pony feels stuck between two worlds being a greaser and being smart like a Soc.
D is for Darry. Darry is the father figure to Ponyboy and Sodapop since their parents past away in a car accident. Due to taking his fathers position he grew up too early causing him, Soda, and Ponyboy to have a father son rather then a brother relationship. And if either the boys got in trouble, they'd be put in foster care.
F is for fantasize. Johnny and Ponyboy like to dream about living in the country. Where there wouldn't be any trouble meaning Socs and Greasers fighting. Though when Johnny and Ponyboy have to go to the country it's because they will get in trouble for killing Bob- the Soc. Though it was self defense the police would never believe it because they are prejudice.
H is for hate. Dallas Winston has so much build up in himself. He practically hates the world, Ponyboy explains that he sees it in his eyes. Dally grew up in the streets of New York, he most likely watched gangs beat up each other and had been arrested at the age of ten.
I is for ignored. Johnny and Bob are alike in various ways. Neither of their parents really care or
love them. If Bobs parents really loved him they would stop blaming themselves for his doings and punish him which would've made him loved. In Johnny's case, he wished his mother would stop ignoring him and his father to stop beating him; but that's what makes the two of the tough as nails.
J is for jaded. Dally gets very frustrated with Johnny when he tells them he's going to turn himself in. Dally beg him not to because he didn't want Johnny to end up like himself- full of carelessness and hated. He explains that the jail turns you cold with no soul. This shows how important Johnny is to Dally and may be possibly the only one he loves.
K is for ken. When Randy and Pony talked he finally understood what Cherry was saying when she said that life wasn't easy for Socs either. It was an all around thing. Though Pony thought that worrying about cars and bad grades would be a blessing, he didn't realize that they too had the same problems like fights and overall happiness.
L is for life saving. When Pony went to help and save the kids burning in the church, he had on Dallys big leather jacket. So when they were taken to the hospital in the ambulance, the medic/doctor told Pony that the jacket spared him severe burns and possibly even death. He was very thankful to know that Dally was looking out for him and that he cared.
M is for moved. Ponyboy asked Soda if he was taking Sandy to the party when Soda got really quiet and embaressed. He explains to Pony, Steve and Darry that she had to move away to Florida with her grandma. Ponyboy wondered why but then he realizes that Sandy must be pregnant. In that case girls aren't allowed to go school in the sixties so she had to move.
N is for naïve. Johnny was very naïve when his mother came and was told he may or may not live since he was in critical condition. He tells Two Bit and Pony that he hasn't lived long enough. There were things he still needed to see and experience. Pony knew that there was a lot of things Johnny hasn't seen growing up on the streets.
O is for observant. Pony becomes observant when he finally realizes Darry cares for him and wants the best. He first started realizing when Soda had sent a letter saying that he should turn himself in and that Darry was worried for him. He finally noticed Darry's love for him when he showed up at the hospital and told him that he thought that they'd almost lost him like their parents. Pony knew how rough that was since Darry and his father were so close. He then found the sense of home.
Q is for quick. When Dally, Johnny, and Pony saw that the church was ablaze, and children were picnicking inside they ran. They didn't think twice to save the kids. This shows how heroic and selfless they are and that they really aren't hoodlums if they thought of the kids first and not themselves.
S is for suicide. When Dally died he wasn't gallant, He died a selfishly. When Johnny passed away, Dallas went insane he "ran like a devil" out of the hospital and robbed a grocery store. Which lead the cops to him and shot him. Due to Johnny dying, he had nothing left that he loved and only saw hate in the world.
U is for unconditional. Sodas love for Sandy, but she didn't feel the same way. And when he found this out and that her baby wasn't his, he was heartbroken. Though, even if it wasn't his child, he still proposed to her but she declined him and her parents didn't approve.
V is for vacuum. Pony has slowly faded into a vacuum, according to Darry. Since Johnny's gallant death and Dally's selfish suicide Ponyboy has been utterly miserable. He'd quit pigging out and gave up hope in school. He has no emotion, an empty heart, and barely living.
W is for worried. Mr. Syme, Pony's English teacher, a seemingly good guy tells Pony to stay after class so they can discuss his grades. He explains to Pony why he is concerned. Since the incident his grades have been dropping dramatically. So the Mr. Syme and pony come to an agreement that if pony does well on his theme he'll pass him. This show Ponyboy that someone cares about him outside of the gang.
X is for xenon. Xenon is a colorless odorless element that isn't noticed until pointed out, but it's still there. This compares to Sodas feelings. When Darry and Pony were fighting they never took notice to Sodas feelings and how it was effecting him. They were finally observed when Ponyboy tackled him and asked him what was bothering him after he ran away.
Y is for yo yo. Just like a yo yo, the story ends where it started. It ended saying that Pony had two things on his mind; Paul Newman and a ride home. Though, throughout reading the story you notice that it was written in pas tense so it makes sense that this was Pony's theme paper to Mr. Syme.
Z is for zebra. Every zebra has a different stripe pattern, every kid has a different story. This story seemed very stereotypical saying that every soc was happy and rich and every greaser is stupid and a delinquent. Though we learned that Bob had it rough at home Randy explained and Pony was actually pretty smart according to his teacher. These kids really can't be defined as one thing.
