PRESENTATION OUTLINE
We start in a town of Springfield, Illinois. The year is 1846. "Dolly" Patty Reed's doll just found out that the Reeds are traveling west. The Donner family and Patty's grandmother are joining them. Finally, one morning they depart for a mysterious quest along the journey west.
Now they are camping out on their first night. Kids are singing and dancing by the fire. Mother, Father and Puss went to Independence, Missouri. They bring back sunbonnets and umbrellas. Mr. Reed applies for Colonel Russel's team. Patty admires the trees that blossom over the dirty mud trail.
Soon, Grandma feels ill. She is not recovering. Later, she dies along the trail. Now, they have to catch up to the Indians that are assisting them. They are losing water and are getting parched.
On June 8th, they made it to Platte Valley. Mountain men stayed the night. It is the Fourth of July. They are staying in Fort Laramie. They meet Indians that want to make a trade with Puss and Billy. Now that Grandma is gone, the other women try to comfort Mrs. Reed. They have a big decision to make- Should they take the cutoff? They decide to go that way.
The travelers find a letter that says Mr. Hastings will be at Fort Bridger. When they arrive he is not there. They decide to stock up on supplies. Later, they discover a note on a bush that says there is a desert that is a forty miles without food or water. Mr. McCutcher, Mr.Reed, Mr. Stanton, go to find Hastings. They also find out they have to cross the mountain.
Patty and everyone is thirsty and hungry. Oxen are hovering near death. Mr. Graves got angry with Mr.Reed and whips the animals, whips Mr and Mrs. Reed. Mr. Reed kills him out of anger. The team votes, and Mr. Reed goes off on his own. Men report seeing Mr. Reed at Sutter's fort.
As they get closer, a steep snow starts to fall. The provisions are close to giving out. They build cabins to have more shelter. his was a difficult time for many, Children and other weak members were left behind. The ones that took the journey are facing the hardest part of the quest and something they will never forget Then one week later a rescue party finds them takes them to California. Down in Sacramento Valley, Patty is reunited with her family. Everything is well again!
