Encephalitis

INFLAMMATION OF THE BRAIN

Causes

  • Most common and dangerous is HSV, but is also rare
  • Breathing in droplets from infected person
  • Contaminated food or drink
  • Mosquitos and other insect bites
  • Skin contact

Encephalitis is not contagious, but any of the viruses that cause encephalitis can be. Make sure that your children are vaccinated with common childhood vaccinations because those are the ones that can also cause this disease.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Poor appetite
  • Loss of energy
  • A general sick feeling

Treatment
Antiviral drugs can be used to treat some forms, especially when caused by HSV.
Corticosteriods can help reduce the swelling in the brain.
Anticonvulsants are used to reduce the seizures.
Acetaminophen is used to reduce fever and headaches.

Prevention
Encephalitis cannot be prevented, follow immunization schedule,and avoid contact with anyone who has been diagnosed.
Avoid being outside from dawn till dusk, wear protective clothing, use insect repellent, stay away from standing water in bird bathes, buckets, flower pots, and tire swings. Always check for ticks.
