Five Fun Facts About Connecticut

1.Connecticut workers were the first people to make many tools and inventions. Their inventions include bicycles, dyed silk, friction matches, printing type, repeating pistols, rubber shoes, and vulcanized rubber (The World Book Encyclopedia World Book Inc. 953). As, you can see, Connecticut has invented some very odd things. They aren't really famous for their inventions. Even though these all may be very odd inventions, they do make a difference, especially since they were made first.

2. Whitfield House, on Guilford, on the Long Island Sound, is the oldest stone house in New England and the oldest house in Connecticut. It was built in 1639 (Student Atlas Peavson Scott Foresman 52). Whitfield House is also a great place where tourists go. It's also a great place to take pictures of the house. Whitfield House is a great landmark because of its history.

3. The first telephone office in the U.S operated in Bridgeport in the late 1870's. In 1878 New Haven issued the first telephone directory (Student Atlas Peavson Scott Foresman 52).

4. Unusual town names include Giants Neck (southeast of Hartford) and Hazardville, above, and Rainbow ( both north of Hartford) (Student Atlas Peavson Scott Foresman 52).

5. The first geography book published in the U.S was Jedediah Morse's Geography Made Easy in New Haven in 1794.
