Easter island (Rapa Nui in the language of the original inhabitants) is located in the south east of the Pacific Ocean. It is famous for 887 statues called Moai. They were created by the Rapa Nui people. Easter island has been under archaeological investigation for over 120 years. The first inventory was taken in 1886, two years before chile annexed the island, was guided by the islanders, and was accomplished by W. j. Thomson, the paymaster, and the crew and officers of the USS Mohican.

The biggest discoveries about Easter island and its Maoi have only been made in the last couple decades. Jo Anne Von Tulburg told Fox News, "it's the first time that one(the statues) has been excavated in such a way that the documentation was complete and scientific".
