Hamster's Blog Project

Project for 5th grade students

  • Content covering: Language Arts
  • Overall goal: Students will write a blog about daily activities in the classroom but with perspective of a hamster (classroom pet).

Objectives:

  • Students will: - Describe all the activities in classroom. - Submit their paper on time. - The blog should be written with the pet's perspective.

Procedures

  • Before class: create the blog.
  • Beginning of class: + Introduce the new hamster. + Explain what a diary is. + Show example.
- Before class: the teacher creates the blog for this class under the name of a hamster.
- Beginning of class:
+ Introduce the new hamster to the class.
+ Explain what a diary is.
+ Show students an example of a diary about classroom activities.

Procedures

  • During the class: + Declare the expectation. + Ask student to do an example. + Collect their works. + Show the students the blog.
- During the class:
+ Declare the expectation about grammar.
+ To make sure the students understand the idea of this project, ask them to write a diary page of activities they did in classroom yesterday. Of course under the hamster's point of view.
+ Collect their works to make sure each of them understands this project clearly.
+ Show the students the blog they're going to post the diary online (the one the teacher created before the class).

Procedures

  • After class: + Pairs of students have to write diary every day and submit to the teacher. + Send the URL of the blog to parents and also class' website.
- After class:
+ Assign students into pairs and each pair has to write a diary for a day in word processing program, then submit to the teacher and the teacher will post it on the blog daily.
+ Send the URL of the blog to parents and also class' website so that the parents and students can check out the project at anytime.

Assessments

  • Students submit their work on time. Appropriate vocabulary and proper grammar.
  • Blog post is about classroom's activities with the pet's perspective.

  • Materials and resources: - Students are able to access word processing program. - Teacher are able to access the Internet and blog page

Learning skills

  • New point of view will support Creative and Critical Thinking Skills.
  • Working in pairs will improve Communication and Collaboration skills.
Learning skills:
- The students will complete their Critical Thinking and Creative skills by writing the paper with the hamster's point of view every day. They need to keep track of all the activities during the class time and imagine how the hamster looks at these activities.
- Working in pairs will help the students improve their Communication and Collaboration skills. They will be able to check each other's grammar and vocabulary error and also learn about how to cooperate effectively.
