The poem chosen for this discussion is My Life by Billy Collins. In the poem, Bill contemplates about the direction his life has taken. He achieves this by presenting a clear account of the daily happenings in his life hence giving the readers an opportunity to understand his overall life. For instance, Bill is smart enough to compare his life to diverse objects including a field, a nest, and a lake. He accepts all the inevitabilities that he encounters hence living in a free manner. According to the poem writer it tends to bring out the view that people must be ready to appreciate life as it could come out in different forms. The best way to enjoy it is to appreciate and live to the fullest at each stage. Connection of the Poem to a New Earth by Tolle The poem connects perfectly to the idea of the pain-body discussed by Tolle in A New Earth. Tolle emphasizes that individuals tend to develop pain-bodies as they come across different events in their lives. Some of the key causes of pain-bodies include enslavement, warfare, and unfair treatment of individuals. As Tolle mentions, the pain-body is able to manifest itself among both children and adults. It makes it difficult for individuals to live their lives freely, because they are always thinking about revenge and resentment. However, the poem insists that we should be able to take life easily as this gives us peace of mind. The pain-body tends to refuse this peace, because it is based on the negative thoughts formed in our minds. The poem connects to Tolle’s assertions that we should live freely without any stresses about our past or future. The best way to live is to avoid negative thoughts about the past. We should get out of our pain-bodies and live a complete life. What I Get from the Poem The most significant idea I got from the poem is that life is rich and wonderful, and we should get out of our cocoons to enjoy it. This meaning comes out clearly when Housden states, “but when the sun will come out/or the phone will ring/and I will cease to wonder.” He implies that people should wake up and realize the goodness of life. They should perceive life to be everything to enjoy it. Life could be a field, a lake, or any other thing the world could imagine. Overall, we should come out and enjoy our lives without stresses. Connection of the Poem with My Own Life and Humanity I can closely link the poem to my own life experience. In my daily life, I come across different events. Some of these events are quite annoying while others are encouraging. In August last year, I remember getting to my apartment only to find my door being widely open. I was surprised, because I was sure locked it when I left the house in the morning. I peeped inside and was shocked when I realized that everything in the house had been stolen. I had lost my laptop and a new television set that I had bought just two days ago. I cried uncontrollably, and several people sympathized with me. I was at the point of giving up with my life, but I realized that life is full of uncertainties, and we should be ready to deal with them as they come. I got over the entire event becoming a strong person. In fact, I have learnt to accept everything about life, because this is the best way of enjoying it. I always remain strong and enjoy every bit of my life even in situations where I tend to lose everything. The poem connects to this situation because of its insistence on the quality of life and our focus on satisfying every part of it at the wake of each day. Bill does not relent comparing his life to different objects such as the lake, because they present the true nature of the life we expect when the sun rises.
