O’Brien’s use of water to draw parallels between experiences during and after the war, is evident when Norman Bowker describes the lake as “filthy and algaed” and the Sa Tra Bong as a “shit field” (132-138). The facsimile between his two descriptions of water, illustrates Bowker’s mutual feeling of cowardice before and after NAM.
